Take care of the horse quilt, then it will last for many years
Washing a horse blanket requires some care to maintain its function and durability. Here are some steps you can follow to properly wash your horse blanket:
Preparation
Shake off dirt: Start by shaking off loose dirt, straw and hair from the cover.
Brush off the cover: Use a brush to remove as much surface dirt as possible.
Check for damage: If there are tears or broken seams, be sure to mend before washing
Wash
Read the care label: Check the blanket’s washing instructions to make sure you don’t damage the material. Some duvets cannot be machine washed, for example some duvets that are made of wool.
Machine wash: If the quilt is machine washable, use a washing machine large enough to handle the weight and size of the quilt. Choose a gentle washing program and use cold or lukewarm water.
Hand wash:** For larger or more delicate quilts, hand wash in a large tub or outdoors may be better. Feel free to use Re:Claim, Rug Wash, which is developed for horse rugs.
Use the right detergent:
- Special detergent for duvets: Use a detergent without strong perfumes or bleach. There are special detergents that are developed for horse blankets and that do not break down waterproof membranes.
Rinse thoroughly
- Make sure the blanket is rinsed thoroughly to remove all detergent residue, as this can irritate the horse’s skin.
Dry the quilt:
- Air dry: Hang the quilt outdoors or in a well-ventilated area. Hang it in a place where air can circulate around the quilt to speed drying.
Avoid Tumble Dryers:** Most horse blankets should not be tumble dried, as this can damage waterproof layers or shrink the material.
Impregnation (if necessary)
- If the duvet is waterproof, it may be necessary to re-impregnate it after washing to ensure that it retains its waterproofness. There are special impregnation agents for this.
By following these steps, you can keep your horse blanket clean and in good condition for longer.
